The Manchester Derby: Red vs Blue, Again

There are derbies… and then there’s the Manchester Derby.

Manchester United and Manchester City have been going at it for well over a century, with the first meeting dating all the way back to 1881. And no, there were no Premier League TV cameras, VAR or fancy stadiums back then!

The first meeting saw Newton Heath LYR – the club that would eventually become Manchester United – beat St Mark’s (West Gorton), the early predecessor of Manchester City, 3–0.

Fast-forward 145 years and the rivalry is still very much alive.

United lead the head-to-head

Across 198 competitive meetings, Manchester United have the historical edge with 81 wins, compared with 62 for City, while 55 matches have ended in draws.

Both clubs have also completed the European/continental treble – United doing it in 1999 and City following suit in 2023.

And, of course, we can’t talk about the rivalry without mentioning Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous description of City as United’s “noisy neighbours”. The phrase became one of the most memorable pieces of banter in the modern history of the derby.

United: Can Bruno pull the strings?

Manchester United head into this derby with plenty of attacking firepower – but also a few questions at the back.

Captain Bruno Fernandes remains the obvious player to watch. He’s not simply a midfielder who waits for the ball; he constantly looks to play forward, create chances and get into dangerous areas himself.

That makes him particularly interesting in a derby where transitions could be crucial.

If City push numbers forward, Fernandes can look for those quick passes into the space behind the midfield or defence. If United are forced to defend deeper, his ability to deliver from set pieces and create something from nothing could become even more important.

And he’s already started the new Premier League season in style.

Fernandes scored a hat-trick in United’s 5–2 win over Ipswich, while Bryan Mbeumo also got on the scoresheet.

Players to watch: Mbeumo & Amad

Bryan Mbeumo is another interesting attacking option for United. His pace and ability to attack space can give City problems, particularly if United win the ball and break quickly.

Amad is another player worth keeping an eye on. His ability to operate in wide areas and move inside can create difficult decisions for City’s defenders.

For bettors looking at player markets, these are the sorts of players who can become interesting in shots, shots on target, assists or goal-involvement markets – although starting line-ups should always be checked before placing a bet.

City: New manager, same ambitions?

Manchester City arrive with something slightly different this season.

After Pep Guardiola’s departure at the end of 2025/26, Enzo Maresca has taken over at the Etihad.

That makes this derby particularly interesting from a tactical point of view.

City have started the new Premier League campaign strongly, winning their first two matches 2–1 against Bournemouth and 4–1 against Crystal Palace. They have scored six goals and conceded just two.

And they haven’t exactly been shy in front of goal.

Against Palace, Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki both scored twice, showing that City’s attacking threat isn’t limited to one player.

Foden, Rodri, Bernardo… and Haaland

Phil Foden remains one of City’s biggest creative threats. He’s capable of finding pockets of space around the edge of the box, combining with teammates and arriving late into dangerous areas.

He’s also already reached 100 Premier League goal contributions for City, underlining just how productive he has been in the final third.

Then there’s Rodri.

When Rodri is controlling the midfield, City can dictate the tempo and keep opponents pinned back. His positioning also gives City’s attacking players more freedom to move forward.

Bernardo Silva brings another layer of technical quality, particularly when City are trying to work through a compact defence.

And then there’s the obvious one…

Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian remains the player United’s defence simply cannot afford to lose track of. Give him half a chance in the box and the scoreboard can change very quickly.

The tactical battle

This is where the derby gets really interesting for anyone looking beyond the basic “Who will win?” market.

Can United hit City on the break?

One potential route for United is the transition.

City are likely to see plenty of the ball, and that can create space behind their attacking players. If United win possession and move the ball quickly, Fernandes, Mbeumo, Amad and the other attacking players can try to exploit that space.

That could make United + goals, United to score or certain player shot markets worth investigating depending on the available odds.

Can City control the midfield?

On the other side, City will want to control possession and territory.

If Rodri and Bernardo can dictate the midfield, United could spend long periods defending. That would increase City’s opportunities to create shots and corners while potentially limiting United’s attacking volume.

This is where markets such as Manchester City corners, City shots or City to have more possession can become interesting alternatives to simply backing the match result.

Form check

The early-season numbers make for an interesting comparison.

Manchester United

  • 2 Premier League matches
  • 1 win, 1 loss
  • 5 goals scored
  • 4 goals conceded
  • Most recent: 5–2 vs Ipswich

Manchester City

  • 2 Premier League matches
  • 2 wins
  • 6 goals scored
  • 2 goals conceded
  • Most recent: 4–1 vs Crystal Palace

So, on the surface, City have the cleaner start.

But this is a derby.

And derbies have a habit of completely ignoring what the form table says.

Betting angles to consider

Rather than looking only at the match-winner market, there are several different ways to approach this game.

Goals: Both teams have already shown they can score, while United have also conceded four goals in their opening two league matches. That makes Over/Under Goals and Both Teams to Score markets worth examining.

Player markets: Fernandes has already scored three times in the league, while Haaland has also started the season strongly. Foden, Mbeumo, Amad and Cherki are other names to consider for shots, assists and goal-involvement markets.

Corners: If City dominate possession and spend long periods attacking, their corner count could become interesting. United’s pace on the counter could also force City defenders into blocks and clearances.

Cards: It wouldn’t be a Manchester Derby without a bit of needle. A high-intensity midfield battle can make cards and player-card markets worth a look, although referee tendencies and confirmed line-ups should be checked before betting.

The big question

On paper, City come into the derby with the stronger early-season record.

But United have home advantage, Bruno Fernandes is already firing, and the pressure of a derby can change everything.

Will City continue their perfect league start under Maresca?

Or will United turn Old Trafford into one very loud red wall?

One thing is certain: Manchester will be watching.
